They walked in a line as they stared at the ground, moving each foot one in front of the other. The Leon county police officer watched the students stumble and lose balance. One by one, they each failed the sobriety line test.

Earlier this week, the freshman students used impaired vision goggles at the Leon County Health Fair to imitate drunk individuals when doing sobriety line tests while being watched by actual police officers.

“I wore the worst impaired vision goggles they had causing me to have no control over my body when taking the test,” freshman Sydney Lebel said. “It felt so real and terrifying.”

The students also used impaired goggles in another drill to drive while intoxicated in a video game.

“They had to actually steer a wheel and drive with the goggles on,” freshman English teacher Anna Bailey said. “Seeing the kids swerve and crash into things in the video game, was a very scary thing to imagine in real life.”

Stations about medicine, food, exercise and many related health booths were displayed by different representatives, teaching students about the importance of one’s health.

“I went to a booth where a nurse explained how certain foods can cause diabetes and illnesses consumed too much,” Justice Sheffield said. “It taught me how delicate my body is and the nutrients it needs to be in good health.”

After the students received items and information on the different aspects of health that interested them; they left with a better understanding and knowledge on how to keep their own health in shape.

“I think the sole purpose of the Leon County Health Fair was to teach and further educate students on all aspects of health,” Bailey said. “I think that’s exactly what it did; the students were pleased with the activities and facts that it provided.”
