After various of sports cancellations in response to Hurricane Harvey, all sports came back excited and ready to work.

Varsity Football

Friday night was a big game for the varsity football team. The team won their first game of the season against Rice High School with a score of 41-6.

“It was awesome seeing all of our hard work come together,” senior James Rodell said. “Since walking off the field last November, we have been preparing ourselves for opening night. Playing Friday night showed us what we are capable of doing.”

The coaches were proud of the boys for their win and showed it with an after-game pep-talk.

“The coaches always remind us after a win to move on with class,” Rodell said. “We need to keep getting better. But, everyone was excited to show all the hard work we had put in.”

Junior Varsity Football

The football spotlight isn’t just on the varsity team. The JV football team also won their first game of the season against Rice High School with a score of 42-0.

“The game was exciting,” sophomore John Vaughn said. “I think both teams have room to improve and become an even better team as we play.”

Cross Country

In other sports, the boys and girls cross country team competed at their first meet last Friday. Senior Daniela Gonzalez placed 27th out of 130 runners.

“We were all pretty nervous for this meet,” Gonzalez said. “Since our other meet had been canceled, we didn’t have much experience going into this one. But, I think we did pretty good. We just need to keep working.”

Volleyball

After sitting out of their scheduled Tuesday night game and missing the second day of a tournament last weekend due to the hurricane, the Lady Bison played a tough game against Lovelady Friday night. After 3 games, 25-21 (loss) 25-10 (win) and 25-20 (loss), however, they did not win.

“We are progressing a lot as a team,” senior Kassidy Bell said. “There are still small things we need to work on but every team has those.”

However, the team members feel the best about this year than they have in a very long time.

“I am very excited for this season,” senior Kaylee Morgan said. “We are doing a lot better than last year. District starts in a couple of weeks and I’m excited for my last round of games.”
