As a high school student who loves musicals, I was super excited to see Wicked finally hit the big screen. Directed by Jon M. Chu, this movie brings the beloved Broadway show to life, and I couldn’t wait to see how it turned out.
The film dives into the backstory of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), the so-called Wicked Witch of the West, and her unexpected friendship with Glinda (Ariana Grande). Their chemistry is electric, making their journey from rivals to besties totally believable. Erivo’s performance of “Defying Gravity” gave me chills, and Grande’s “Popular” was both hilarious and spot-on.
Visually, the movie is a feast for the eyes. The sets and costumes are stunning, immersing you in the magical world of Oz. However, at nearly three hours, the film does feel a bit long, and some scenes could have been tighter. But the captivating musical numbers and strong performances make up for it.
Overall, Wicked is a must-see for fans of the musical and newcomers alike. It’s a magical journey that reminds us there’s more to every story—and every person—than meets the eye.
