The cross country team competed at the Elkhart meet earlier this week. With only two weeks left before district, the team is trying to prepare to do their best at district and advance.
There was only a varsity team for each boys and girls team with each team containing eight and nine runners. Both races had more than 100 competitors from 3A-4A.
“Most of our district was present at the meet but there were other schools there too,” Junior Jose Sanchez said. “There was about one hundred runners, which is average in a race.”
Out of the girls, the best runner was Daniela Reyes, who placed 21st out of 135 runners with a time of 14:40. The rest of the girls were not far behind and had improved times from the previous meet in Hillsboro.
“Daniela did really good. She’s been training really hard and the results are shown in her times,” Junior Yomele Almeida said. “I’m proud of myself too because I did better than I expected.”
The top boy runner was Jose Diaz, who placed 36th out of 106 runners. Most of their district competitors were there, so it was a good chance to see where the team stands compared to others.
“We saw our competition and what they are capable of,” Sanchez said. “I feel we did okay compared to them, but in district I know we can do a lot better.”
Since the district meet will be held in the same location, the runners agreed that they are better prepared and they now know what to expect. They also said that now, they know how to run the course and which parts to run faster in.
“I now know what to expect for district,” Almeida said. “I know what to work on in practice to improve my time for the district meet.”
