Last Friday night’s game against Normangee saw the Bison take their second victory of the season, defeating the Panthers 31-8. Despite the score, the boys didn’t feel that it was their top performance.
“Although we won, I feel we didn’t play our best,” sophomore Hector Dominguez said. “We could have won by a larger margin, but we committed a lot of mistakes.”
Most of the players said that while the opposing team was not as skilled as they had imagined, they did carry a big defensive line. They said the Panther team’s strength was their defense.
“They had a bigger line that what we expected,” senior Samuel Cervantes said. “It wasn’t enough to stop our offense, though.”
The Bison defense had a lot of success, according to the players. Defense dominated throughout the game, they contained the Panther offense. Joel Montano caught an interception which brought up the momentum of the game.
“Our defense was amazing,” junior Ryan Rath said. “We caught several picks – #noflyzone.”
The team goals for last week was to stay strong throughout the game and shut the other team down.
“Our main priority was to win,” Dominguez said. “We want to start the season out better this year.”
That is exactly what the players have had in mind all summer: to win. The majority of the team worked out throughout the summer and have been preparing for this season. The players say the team has great chemistry and is looking towards some great things this season.
“I feel more confident this season,” junior Jordy Maltos said. “We’ve worked so hard all summer, and we know that what we put in will be our results.”
This week the Bison will host Grapeland. They expect to see more competition at this game.
“We need to go out with a clear mind and focus on the game,” Maltos said. “We will face our first big challenge this week, and we need to play our best.”
