Last Christmas, a holiday romcom, focuses on Kate (played by Emilia Clarke), an aspiring singer who has made many poor decisions; her latest is taking a job as an elf in a year-round Christmas shop.
The movie starts with Kate, who has recently survived a life-threatening illness, showing signs of depression, which has her mother Petra (played by Emma Thompson) and her friends worried about her. As the Christmas season approaches, Kate runs into Tom (played by Henry Golding), a volunteer who inspires Kate to turn her life around. But Kate worries that he might be too good to be true.
The film has characters that are diverse: ethnicities, sexual orientations, disabilities, and non-stereotypical gender roles. The film also features music from George Michael and Wham! The messages that are sent across to the audience are the benefits of doing service work and unplugging to engage with the world around you. It may not be the typical Christmas movie, but it is a great add-on to your holiday movie list.
