The Thundering Herd faced off the Edgewood Bulldogs in a heart-pounding match. Both undefeated teams fought for the district championship title; however,  the Bison pulled through with a 54-36 win.

“We have wanted this title since last year and worked all summer to win it,” senior Luis Porras said. “The team was very pumped when we finally won because being district champions definitely makes our playoff run easier until the third round.”

From the start, the game was close. As one team scored a touchdown, the other would follow with another touchdown.

“It was important that we continued to score because we did not want them trailing behind us,” senior Marshal Jonas said. “We wanted a bigger lead to be secure.”

Within the first quarter, the Bison lead 24-18 with two touchdowns from Jamaul Randle, one from Marshal Jonas and a field goal from Francisco Saldana.  

“It felt great to add more points to the scoreboard and help my team get the win we really wanted,” Jonas said. “We have worked so hard all season.”

Both teams returned to the field third-quarter ready to take on the lead. However, the Bulldogs could not contain the Bison offensive, with Randle scoring another two touchdowns.

“Offensively we spread the field out so we could get our running game going,” senior Colton Green said.  “I know my guys would get it done, everyone executed and did what they had to.”

The Bison grasped the coveted title they so desperately chased. After losing the district championship game last year, the boys came back and won it this year.

“We lost in a heartbreaker last season,” junior Roberto Garcia said. “We felt like we had unfinished business and it felt good to finally get the title.”

It is the Bison first outright District Title since 1974. This team is making history and hoping to make more.

“This win really gave us a confidence boost,” Green said. “Hopefully we can carry it into the playoffs and keep the momentum – #whynotus.”
