Last weekend the powerlifting teams participated at the Malakoff meet for their second meet this season. Both teams had several lifters medal in their weight class.
“Everyone did an excellent job Saturday,” junior Daniella Reyes said. “Coach was very proud of us.”
The boys’ team finished in third place – originally they were in a tie for second but lost on the tie-breaker.
“I was quite upset that we fell short,” sophomore Hector Dominguez said. “However, that just means we have to work harder now.”
The girls’ team had three out of four medal in their weight class. Freshman Jordan Early placed fifth in the 114 lb weight class, Reyes placed third in the 132 lb weight class, and junior Evan Johnson placed third in the 181 lb weight class.
“This meet was very tough for all of us,” Early said. “I think both teams had a lot of competition; we really pushed ourselves this time.”
The boys’ medalists were: Logan Shaw second in the 114 lb weight class; Truman Garza placed fourth in the 148 lb weight class; Ulises Guerrero placed first in the 148 lb weight class; Dominguez placed second in the 181 lb weight class; and Benito Rivas placed third in the 275 lb weight class.
“I’ve been working really hard for this season,” Guerrero said. “It’s my senior year. I have to finish strong.”
The group’s next meet will be in Leon on Thursday.
“I try to push myself every day,” Dominguez said. “Powerlifting is something that I have always loved, and hopefully all my work will pay off.”
