Senior John “Asa” Henson signed a letter of intent with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor to play college football on National Signing Day last Wednesday. In addition to football, Henson will pursue a degree in Biology on a Pre-Med track.
Henson will receive an academic scholarship to cover half of his tuition per semester for training and playing football.
“I visited the campus, and the atmosphere was so welcoming, it felt like the right place for me,” Henson said. “They offered me a good scholarship; I couldn’t turn it down.”
Henson began playing football at the beginning of his high school career and said his years of dedication and practice have paid off for him.
“I’m really excited, and I look forward to the next four years at UMHB,” Henson said. “It’s going to be a huge opportunity and a challenge to be able to play for them.”
Football is not the only sport for Henson: he has played four years of varsity basketball and four years of Track and Field, along with honors and upper-level courses. At UMHB, Asa will be solely focused on football and his studies towards attending Medical School in the near future.
“Being committed felt good. It was a relief because now I know I have a plan after high school,” Henson said. “My advice to future athletes is to give effort and work hard, and soon you’ll receive what you worked for.”
