The Bison baseball team hosted a tournament over spring break, continuing an annual tradition – until it was cut short by coronavirus worries.

The tournament was cut short due to safety precautions over the COVID-19. The teams played the first games of the tournament before UIL suspended all competitions. Later, practices and rehearsals were suspended, as well.

“I hate that we didn’t get to finish up the tournament because every game we were getting better,” senior Josh Rodriguez said. “But I also want to be safe from getting sick.”

The Bison went up against Iola and came out with an easy 11-0 sweep on Thursday. They then faced Blooming Grove on Friday but fell short 11-4.

“The teams we played definitely showed us our weaknesses,” freshman Gavin Pruitt said. “I feel like each game we improved and fixed those mistakes. I just wish we could have kept going.”

Due to the virus and in an attempt to control its spread, UIL has suspended all activities, both sports and academics, through May 4. All schools are closed until April 3 as well, per Governor Greg Abbott, with some districts currently planning to be out longer. BHS currently plans to return on April 6.

“The virus has taken away our season, but hopefully not forever,” sophomore Richard Renteria said. “We are ready to come back stronger and have our time to play the sport we love.”
