Coral coming back to life

Angelica Garcia

Scientists have recently discovered coral that was thought to have been killed due to heat stress, but that seems to have come back to life. The discovery was made by Diego K. Kersting while he was diving during an expedition in the Spanish Mediterranean. A quarter of this coral was lost from Spain’s Columbretes Islands due to a serious heatwave in 2003. This type of coral grows very slowly, only about 3 milliliters a year, which means the heat waves are killing about 10-15 percent of the cover.
