“Annie” falls short
A remake of the classic 1982 musical Annie hit the big screen last month. Starring many well-known actors such as Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, and Quvenzhane Wallis as Annie, the movie is full of feel-good and engaging moments.
The remake is a modern version of the original story of an orphan’s hopeless situation changing dramatically when she is selected to spend a short time with a wealthy businessman.
Unfortunately, the movie is a bit dependent on knowing the original storyline, too wobbly to stand on its own. The musical numbers lacks the pizzazz and the choreography of the originals.
The strength of the acting keeps the movie from being a complete flop, and the story is at least engaging enough to make it watchable. Overall, though, the movie does not turn the storyline into the powerful tale it could have been.
