Saturn has more moons than previously known

Saturn+has+more+moons+than+previously+known

Twenty new moons have been discovered circling Saturn, giving the planet a total of 82 satellites. Out of the 20 new moons, 17 of them seem to be moving in the opposite direction of Saturn’s rotation; the new moons take three Earth years to fully orbit Saturn.

Saturn now beats Jupiter with its 79 moons. Astronomer Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for Science said that it was fun to find that Saturn is the true moon king. Although Saturn has more moon than Jupiter, Jupiter is the biggest planet and also has the biggest size moon. Sheppard and his team used a telescope in Hawaii to find Saturn’s 20 new moons over the past summer and about 100 tinier moons may be orbiting Saturn. 17 of Saturn’s new moons orbit Saturn in the opposite direction while the other three circle the same direction that Saturn rotates. Just last year, Sheppard found 12 new moons around Jupiter. The Carnegie Institution had a moon-naming contest for them; another one is happening now for Saturn’s new moon.
