Africans living in northern India are locking themselves indoors after a series of mob attacks have left multiple victims hospitalized. Multiple attacks were reported last week in Greater Noida, 18 miles southwest of the capital New Delhi. Police said the violence began over the weekend, following the death of a teenager in an alleged drug overdose. His family filed a police report against five men accused of drug peddling. Following their release, counter protests became violent, with 500 to 600 people attacking two African students in one attack.
While Indian media have expressed horror at the attacks, some Africans say the topic of racism is being avoided or overlooked, at the cost of their safety.
