Parents of middle school students in a South Carolina school are upset after children are forced to learn the Five Pillars of Islam. This Social Studies curriculum requires sixth graders to learn about Islam because it is “a religion of peace.”
The Five Pillars of Islam include reciting the Muslim profession of faith, daily prayers (Salat), alms giving (Zakat), fasting during Ramadan, and a pilgrimage to Mecca.
Numerous parents believe that permission should have been asked before giving a lesson on religious values. It was noted that parents can opt their children out if they contact the school.
