After sweeping the album, record and song of the year categories, Adele dedicated her speech to honoring Beyonce, who was also a nominee for album and record of the year. The British singer admitted that Beyonce’s Lemonade was “monumental” and also said that she felt that she didn’t deserve at least one of the awards that she’d received at Sunday night’s Grammy Award Show.
“I felt like it was her time to win.” Adele said. In the past five years Beyonce has taken a backseat to Adele and Beck in the album of the year category. Following her speech, Adele broke her gramophone trophy in two and shared the other half with Beyonce.
Both of the singers performed at Sunday’s show. Adele opened the with “Hello” and also performed a tribute to George Michael. Beyonce’s performance was her first since the announcement of her pregnancy with twins. Her show involved themes of motherhood, family and feminism all of which were in her Lemonade album.
