Speech students traveled to Godley on Saturday to compete at the Godley Speech & Debate Meet. Students placed in every event entered: Sheri Donaldson placed first in poetry, Lilah Adams third and Tana Cleveland fifth; in extemp speaking, Lilah Adams placed sixth, and in CX debate, Nadia Garcia and Colby Menefee placed second.
The students have been preparing throughout the whole year for their events. Students believe that this meet was a big stone step for district meet because it revealed that they are capable of placing and succeeding.
“At this meet, I realized that I had underestimated myself this whole year,” Sheri Donaldson said. “I am now aware that I have the capacity to do good.”
The students arrived at the school at 5:15 am ready to travel and then compete. Most of the speech meets require students to arrive very early, but this meet was the earliest.
“I know waking up early is very exhausting,” Nadia Garcia said. “However, it is worth it, especially when we place.”
According to the students that competed in poetry, it was really fun and they had a great experience. Also, they all said that they had great competition in the room.
“Everyone competing in our room was very good,” Tana Cleveland said. “It was very fun to compete, as well as seeing everyone else’s talents.”
The CX team went undefeated until their last round. They won 3 rounds and only lost one.
“Nadia and I did exceptionally well,” Colby Menefee said. “We held our ground and won all of our rounds but one.”
Lilah Molina competed in extemp speaking at the meet. This is her first time placing in the event all year.
“I was very excited to compete in the event,” Lilah Adams said. “I improve every meet and that’s the most important thing- improving.”
Overall, the students said that the meet was very fun and they had a blast. They all placed and stopped for burgers at a local burger shop before the long drive home.
“The food was so good,” Sheri Donaldson said. “One of my favorite parts about the meets is the food; it’s always really good.”
