“Dying of the Light” falls short
Nicolas Cage stars as Evan Lake in Dying of the Light, which was released late last year. Paul Schrader’s movie adaptation of the book left viewers a bit confused and disappointed.
Cage plays a former CIA operative who is suffering from frontotemporal dementia, a disease of the brain. His disease alters his perception of things, leaving the results up to interpretation of the viewers. The movie is definitely one that makes viewers think; it’s nearly impossible know reality from illusion. However, the movie was seized from director Schrader’s control and disowned by most of the cast, leaving it only a hint of what it could have been. It’s possible to see the vision that Schrader and the cast members originally saw, but the end result didn’t quite live up to it.
