The cosmetology program is in its second year at the high school, and students are learning more than ever, with classes – and career opportunities – increasing this year. Second-year students are excited about the growth of the program and the skills they are learning.
“I have learned so many new things, such as how to wash hair properly, along with disinfecting tools properly,” senior Stephanie Lopez said. “I’m also learning how to start a business.”
The courses offered have expanded, with teacher Jaci Duck now teaching for a full school day.
“Last year and this year are very different in this program, Duck said. “Last year there were only three class periods and a Cosmetology 1, and this year there are eight class periods and there is also a Cosmetology 2; this year, second-year students can graduate with their cosmetology license.”
Students work on both humans and mannequins, and most of their assignments are hands-on rather than bookwork and worksheets.
“I like working on dummies more than humans even though they are both fun to do,” senior Diana Perez said. “I work better with dummies, mainly because when I work on humans it is very nerve-racking and scary, especially when it is your first time doing so.”
Most of the seniors in the class are in their second year in the program and will have their full license when they graduate.
“I enjoy being in this class,” senior Brenda Muniz said. “I see myself doing something in this area of work when I finish high school. This class definitely gives me more job opportunities.”
