Over the Moon’s emotional journey is solid and well-expressed. This is a beautiful movie that celebrates Chinese culture, tells a story of overcoming grief and has some great animation. Adventurous young Fei Fei builds a rocket ship and flies it to the moon to meet the mythical goddess Chang’e. She has been told the legend of the Moon goddess, who took a potion for immortality, causing her to become a goddess and ascend to the Moon without her lover Houyi. She waits for him there. Fei Fei wants to prove to everyone that Chang’e is real.

The movie was released last fall and is now available on Netflix. It was directed by Glen Keane, a character animator at Walt Disney Animation Studios for feature films including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Tarzan and Tangled. Over the Moon’s main voice actors are Cathy Ang and Phillipa Soo who play as Fei Fei and Chang’e. Where the film undoubtedly stands out is in the design of sets, costumes, landscapes and the creation of the fantastic world of the moon. In an era where people all over the world are losing loved ones to the pandemic, this film is sure to touch hearts.
