Journalism students competed in the CenTex UIL Invitational earlier this month. The students competed in different categories ranging from, editorial, feature, news, headline and copy editing.
¨I think it is a great start to our competition season,¨ adviser Melonie Menefee said. ¨It definitely shows that we are on the right track to win district once again.¨
Several students placed in Editorial Writing: Colby Menefee first, Kayleigh Rhodes second, Andrea Garcia third, Tana Cleveland seventh and Ashley White 10th.
¨I was surprised that I had placed in Editorial,¨ Rhodes said. ¨I have never actually competed in the event, but I am glad that I did because It shows me that I am capable to compete in it come March.¨
News Writing had several students placing, as well. Megan Wedhorn placed first, Jazlyn Early third, Colby Menefee fourth and Josalyn Taylor seventh.
¨I want to compete in the event for District,¨ Taylor said. ¨This is definitely good practice.¨
In Feature Writing, Sheri Donaldson placed fourth and Colby Menefee placed eighth.
¨I was the state champion last year in feature,¨ Menefee said. ¨This meet definitely helped me get back into the groove of things.¨
Menefee also placed second in Copy Editing and ninth in Headline Writing.
¨Copy Editing is a new event this year – it has been a pilot for the last two years,¨ Menefee said. ¨I think it would be great to advance to regionals in a brand-new event.¨
Competing in the meet is part of the group’s prep for district in March; the team has taken first place overall and sent competitors to regionals and state for multiple years in a row.
¨We are excited about district,¨ Rhodes said. ¨Our results in this meet showed that we have many potential competitors for every event.¨
