Big Brown Power Plant and Mine in Fairfield has closed permanently and has left 168 workers without a job.
Luminant, who owns the plant, said they closed it due to market forces, the plant’s age, and economic factors. The plant has been running for nearly 50 years and has created many jobs for the community. It is expected to make an economic impact for Freestone County.
Around 20 employees will remain during mine reclamation and until the plant is fully demolished.
Besides Big Brown, Luminant has also closed two power plants in the state, Sandow Power Plant in Milam County and Monticello Power Plant near Mt. Pleasant.
