Golf teams advance to regionals

Noel Rubel earns spot at state

For the first in history, Buffalo qualified both the girls’ and boys’ golf team for regionals. The girls’ team brought home the district champ title, while the boys’ team took second place in the district meet.

“We were all very impressed with how much we have improved,” freshman Makayla Gilliam said. “We knew we would end up winning district champs.”

Noel Rubel received the first place medal, and Kassidy Bell received sixth place for the girls.

“Every meet on our score cards, we would get better,” Bell said. “Hard work truly pays off.”

Both teams have been practicing steadily since January. The team travels 30 minutes to the nearest golf course twice or more every week for practice. And with every practice meet, competitors brought home medals.

“We leave to  practice right after school and come back around seven,” Gilliam said. “We’d forget how late it was getting sometimes just because we enjoy playing so much.

The teams travel to Brenham for the Regional meet last week. On the girls’ side, Noel Rubel placed third overall and will advance to state competition later this month.

“I am really proud of the team and their determination,” Coach Robert Rubel said.  “Everyone worked hard and pushed each other to become better.  It is because of that that Noel made it [to state].  We are proud of her and just want her to enjoy her experience and progress from it.”
