My opinion: Oscar Pistorius not guilty of murder
Oscar Pistorius, also known as the Blade Runner, is known all over the world for overcoming adversity by competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics. That doesn’t sound like such a great feat, until you realize that he has two prosthetic legs.
People all over the world (including myself) admired him greatly. Though Pistorius did not medal, he still achieved the greatest victory he could imagine: being allowed to compete in the Olympics with other runners who still had both of their real legs.
Pistorius had fans from all walks of life; that is, he had fans everywhere until February of 2013. One night, according to Pistorius, he mistook the sounds of commotion from inside his bathroom for an intruder, and he fired four shots through the door. Inside the room, however, was girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
After Pistorius realized what he had done, he rushed to try and get help for his model girlfriend. Unfortunately, his attempts were in vain; she passed away before help could arrive.
Fast forward to earlier this month. After months of deliberation, Judge Thokozile Masipa found Oscar Pistorius “negligent”, but did not charge him with premeditated murder. Instead, she found him guilty of culpable manslaughter. It looks like Oscar will have some jail time, but not nearly as long of a sentence as previously thought.
Judge Masipa may have ruled the situation an accident, but people all over have chosen sides. Personally, I agree that he didn’t do it on purpose; others are still convinced that he intentionally murdered Reeva Steenkamp.
As for his punishment, I believe that he should receive a small sentence but nothing over a year. His sentence will be handed down October 13.
