At this year’s Expo Center Safety Day, HOSA members were invited to present to sixth grade students and freshmen from different schools across the county. The group had two different stations set up for the younger students to explore.
“We all had a uniformed look and were very well put together,” teacher Eustacy Cornett said. “The younger kids learned a lot and all of our members were very active. I was very proud of the members and I felt like we represented Buffalo HOSA very well.”
One station taught students about the dangers of vaping and had a Jeopardy game to go along with it. The kids were rewarded with candy after getting the correct answer.
“I thought that it was very empowering for us as volunteers to go out and educate younger kids,” junior Yazmin Richardson said. “I was really excited to wear scrubs for the first time.”
The other station taught the kids on how to properly use crutches. They were then challenged to race against each other using the crutches. Whoever crossed the finish line was rewarded a pen and the other was given a piece of candy.
“The kids were very eager to learn and they had a lot of fun with it,” senior Sharlene Le said. “Everything went smoothly and we gave the kids an opportunity to get hands-on experience in a controlled environment.”
The HOSA members enjoyed the day.
“It was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed seeing how the kids were so attentive to what I was saying,” senior Guadalupe Gonzalez said. “It was amazing how they were learning and still having fun at the same time.”
