The gym buzzed with energy as students filed in, eager to explore what the future might hold. Banners from colleges lined the walls, their bright colors competing for attention. Representatives stood behind tables covered in brochures, handing out information and smiles in equal measure. The air was thick with anticipation– this was College Career Day, and for many, it felt like the first real step toward the future.
“Everywhere I looked, my classmates moved with a sense of purpose, excited yet anxious about the decision that lay ahead,” sophomore Myla Taylor said. “I really liked the army station. I got to talk to the representative, he was really fun and made the conversation engaging. We also got to scan a QR code to win a prize; I got a small speaker and an LED fan.”
Some students don’t know what career they have decided to study, while others have been planning since they were younger. One of these students is sophomore Camdyn Evans.
“I felt very informed. The TXDOT station was really cool, and getting paid 20 dollars an hour is pretty good,” Evans said. “Having a career day at the school was a great way to help students see all of the different opportunities and choices they have of colleges they can attend. The TXDOT station was definitely my favorite station because they talked about business and that is something I want to go to college for.”
Career Day offers students a unique opportunity to explore their options beyond high school. Students were able to talk to representatives and professionals from each college’s multiple career areas and gather valuable information about different career paths and educational opportunities. They also received help clarifying their interests and asking questions about specific programs. The event was organized by counselor Debbie Read.
“The event allows students to look at colleges they might be interested in without having to go to them,” Read said. “I was able to see students engaging and interested. I hope to have more colleges come in the upcoming years.”
