While some died heroes, others were born. In honor of the heroism that was shown during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the high school hosted a luncheon for local first responders. FCCLA and FFA members helped Chief Mitchell Gatson and their advisors prepare and serve the meal as well as decorate for the event.
“We had a great turnout and excellent feedback from all of the people that attended,” Gatson said. “All the attendees spoke very highly of the FCCLA organization as well as the FFA group.”
The annual event is near to Gatson’s heart.
“When I first joined the field, I mostly did it because I needed the money,” Gatson said. “Later, I realized helping people and being the reason why someone smiles is an important part of why I love doing this job.”
The meal featured grilled chicken and sausage, mashed potatoes and green beans as well as cupcakes for dessert. Junior Aimee Salazar helped at the luncheon.
“I enjoyed serving to the first responders,” Salazar said. “Serving them was a kind act of repaying them for their hard work.”
FCCLA advisor Chelsea Nelson’s culinary class helped by baking the cupcakes and other desserts they had. They also made sweet tea for beverages. Nelson’s students help each year.
“I look forward to helping make this happen again in the upcoming years,” Nelson said. “A meal makes the first responders feel seen and know their job is making a difference.”
