Bison come out on top of Hillsboro in season opener
Football season seems to be the highlight of the fall semester in small towns. A new school year brings new players and new talents. To kick off the season, the Bison varsity opened with an away game against the Hillsboro Eagles. The pressure to meet the high expectations for the season and to fill the shoes of the graduated seniors was felt by many of the players. The doubts and skepticism only put fire into the teams’ will to win, and the Bison and came out with a 55-21 victory.
“We felt a lot of pressure before the first game because we no longer have Jose (Dominguez) as a powerhouse on the team,” senior Jacob DeBorde said. “We wanted to show we could do it without him and prove the spectators wrong.”
The athletes worked out through the summer and then stepped it up during two-a-days to better themselves for the upcoming season. The first game was their first real chance to show off all of their hard work. For seniors, it meant the last first football game as a Bison.
“The first game was fantastic,” senior Tyler Adams said. “It was devastating because it is my last year, but we’re going to give it all we have.”
The graduating class of 2013 took with it many key players. But the team this year is determined to be better than ever before. The chance to prove themselves to the home crowd comes this Friday as they host rival Teague Lions in the first home game of the year.
“This season we are going to go out and get better every day,” senior Logan Jones said. “Our goal is to work together as a team and make it to playoffs.”
