“Speed Dating,” was a part of the genetics unit in Biology class.
Students had to take the genotypes and phenotypes from their monster and speed date with other student monsters to figure out potential genes of the monster offspring.
“It was pretty fun and educational,” Alani Jones said. “I hope we get to do more activities like this one, it really helped me understand genetics.”
Once they had the traits from their monster date, they completed Punnett squares and moved on to the next date. Punnett squares show probabilities of different genetics being combined. By the end of the activity, students have created three monsters.
“I had different monsters by the end, it helped a lot to see the different possibilities with combining a variety of features,” Terell Brooks said. “I got to talk with other students that I normally don’t talk to, which was nice getting out of my comfort zone.”
