Most people think about dissecting frogs when they think about high school labs, but teacher Megan McMullen got a little more creative with her students when they dissected eyeballs.
“I was kind of scared of dissecting an eye but it wasn’t too bad,” junior Gracelynn Dawson said. “It was interesting to see how everything in the eye works.”
In the lab, students were able to see how the different body systems work together to allow animals to see. They were able to view all different parts of the eye.
“The eye itself was very hard to cut into,” junior Madison Walker said. “Once you finally cut it, it was very slimy. The retina was a pretty color, though.”
According to McMullen, this is one of her favorite labs because it’s easy to complete in one period. This is part of her curriculum for the animal sciences anatomy & physiology unit and states that she will definitely do this lab again.
“Overall, I think the students handled it well,” McMullen said. “They were a little grossed out as with any dissection, but I think most of them found it interesting.”
