As the district announced a closure extension through March 27, followed this morning by Governor Abbot’s extension of all school closures through April 3, teachers found themselves facing the challenge of teaching their students while not actually seeing their students.
“I know our teachers are going to do the best they can under a difficult situation,” superintendent Lacy Freeman said in a video address to faculty and staff. “We’ll do the best we can with this and work through what we’re dealing with.”
According to Freeman, all facilities, including buses, have been cleaned and sanitized this week so that when school does go back into session, everything will be ready to go.
Since the start of the school closure on Monday, students have been able to pick up breakfasts and lunches at the lower junior high each day. This service will continue next week, with both meals being available at one pick-up time.
“Students can pick up breakfast and lunch at the same time starting next Monday, the 23rd, from 11:30 to 1:00 at the lower junior high,” Freeman said.
UIL events have been postponed through May 4, per an announcement by the state office this morning. All facilities are closed to practices and rehearsals.
“I hate the possibility that spring sports, academic and UIL contests might not happen, but I think that UIL is trying to find ways to make things work while keeping us all safe,” UIL coordinator Melonie Menefee said. “I think our seasons might end up looking a lot different than any season we’ve ever had, but I am hopeful they find a way to let these kids do what they love and work so hard to do.”
Despite the uncertainty of what the future holds, Freeman feels certain the district will continue to work for the best of the students.
We’re making the best of a tough situation. We’re resilient. We’re Buffalo Bison,” Freeman said. “We’re going to be here for our kids. I know our teachers and staff feel the same way. When we get a chance to get back into school, we’ll be there.”
