Migrants traveling in a caravan broke through a Guatemalan border fence and poured into Mexican territory Friday. The group was defying orders by Mexican authorities for an orderly crossing as well as President Donald Trump’s threats of retaliation. He has made it clear to Mexico that he is monitoring its response. On Thursday he threatened to close the U.S. border if Mexico didn’t stop the caravan.
On the Mexican side of the border, they were confronted by police with riot shields. About 50 pushed through before the officers soaked the group with pepper spray, causing the rest retreated.
The gates were closed again, and the chaos calmed a bit, with the migrants forming lines and crossing the bridge.
