The leaders of North and South Korea announced agreements Wednesday which they said were a major step toward peace on the Korean Peninsula. However, the pledge to denuclearize contained a big condition, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un saying he would permanently dismantle his main nuclear complex only if the United States takes corresponding steps.
This meeting between the two leaders was much more productive than the two summits they held earlier in the year. Kim agreed to allow inspection and monitoring of a missile test site and launch page and said he will visit Seoul soon. In addition, the two plan to work to earn the chance to host the 2032 Summer Olympics.
So far, the “corresponding steps” North Korea wants from the US has not been specified.
Declaring they had made a major step toward peace, Moon and Kim stood side by side as they announced their joint statement to a group of North and South Korean reporters after a meeting Wednesday morning.
