FCCLA members traveled to Galveston, Texas for the Region IV FCCLA conference on February 14-17. The group brought home a first-place trophy, four second-place trophies and two fourth-place trophies, with contestants now moving on to state competition. As senior Chelsea Harter finished her year as regional vice president of competitive events, junior Makayla Gilliam and freshman Callie Harter were elected to regional positions.
“I was really honored to take on this role my senior year,” Harter said. “I am so proud of all of our FCCLA members who competed because I know how much hard work they put into all of their events.”
Harter fulfilled her role this year by managing all of the competitions.
“I had to make sure all of the evaluators, lead consultants and room consultants were all in their rooms and doing everything properly,” Harter said. “I had a really successful time there, but I am ready to hand this job on to the next person.”
Juniors Lupita Martinez and Iveth Molina won first place in Sports Nutrition.
“After four months of hard work I think we earned it,” Martinez said. “In our event we had to make a meal plan and workout plan for an athlete. Sometimes we have big limitations like calorie intake or sugar intake. Along with our presentation, we decided to show the judges just how easy it was to cook our meals by making them nine of the meals from the meal plan.”
There will be approximately 30 teams at the state competition in Sports Nutrition.
“I think we have a good shot at going to Nationals,” Molina said. “I’m really excited because we only got two and a half points off of a perfect score, so we just have minor revisions to do before state and hopefully we will go to Nationals after that.”
Junior Emma Reeder placed second in Career Investigations.
“I was so happy that I placed second because it wasn’t easy,” Reeder said. “I was the only one out of our school who is going to state and is in a solo event because the rest of them are in a team. They get to rely on each other and I rely on only myself, so I think it was tougher for me.”
FCCLA adviser Melissa Isaacs brought 15 teams total to the competition.
“I couldn’t be more honored to be these kids advisor,” Isaacs said. “I am so proud that we are taking so many kids to State; honestly, I think they all deserve to go to State. We had a great year so far and I know they have it in them to go to Nationals. I’m so proud of them.”
