Last week speech students traveled to Austin to compete in a debate in a mock congressional debate. Capitol Congress pits almost 200 students from schools of all sizes against one another.

“It was kind of intimidating,” senior Nadia Garcia said. “I prepared arguments for each bill for weeks in advance, so I was ready, but I was still nervous.”

The debate was held in the Texas state capitol.

“Being in the capitol made it feel like I was really a part of the government,” junior Andrea Garcia said. “The building was so big, I kept getting lost.”

Senior Lilah Molina and Sophomore Colby Menefee both advanced to finals.
“We had never competed in the debate before, so I wasn’t sure if any of them would be able to break from the morning session to the afternoon session,” coach Melonie Menefee said. I judged one of the sessions that none of the Buffalo students were in; the competition was tough. I’m really proud that they made it.”
