Student Spotlight: Abby Smith
High school gives students a chance to get involved in many clubs and organizations, all of which offer chances to grow in leadership skills, community service and building memories with other students. This is something that senior Abby Smith has taken advantage of. Smith has been involved in many activities throughout high school, Including Speech and debate, FCCLA, 4-H and National Honor society.
“Clubs like 4-H have taught me skills that I will need in my later years,” Smith said. “It’s also a chance to meet new people; I’ve met so many new people doing 4-H and FCCLA it’s crazy to even think about it.”
Throughout her years in high school, Smith has been a member of the Bison Brigade, where she has spent four years holding a leadership position and now is drum major.
“Abby is an incredibly hard worker and also has a kind way of delegating,” Brigade director Jeff Villarreal said. “I have always trusted Abby with younger students. She has a very kind soul and a way of working with students that makes them feel “at ease” and comfortable, even when they are in unfamiliar circumstances.”
According to Villarreal, Smith is always willing to help any of the younger students. Abby was there when the band first turned into the brigade and has helped set the brigade on the right path.
“Abby is always willing to help, never making excuses or discussing how difficult something is, but always finding a solution,” Villarreal said. “She has always been a role model for incoming students. She will be greatly missed when she graduates, but I know she has prepared future students with the tools necessary to lead this band to great things.”
Abby is the second youngest sibling in her blended family, with four older brothers and a younger sister.
“I have eight people in my family, so growing up was hectic,” Smith said. “It was like everyone was going in eight different directions.”
Abby as one younger sister, Ally, who is a freshman this year. Abby and Ally are involved in speech together.
“Its really cool that my sister decided to do speech.” Abby said. “I like being able to help her when she needs help and being able to help guide her.”
