Debate members have a working lunch between rounds at a meet at Godley High School. The students and their coaches had to leave at 5:15 am to make it to the meet.

Debaters traveled to Godley to compete in the last Saturday meet before the CX district contest on Wednesday.

Freshman Lilah Molina and sophomore Evan Grisham won three of the four rounds.

“Since district is Wednesday, we wanted to get as much practice as we could,” Molina said. “We did really well and learned a lot.”

All team members faced the challenge of experienced competition, but but won plenty of rounds.

“This speech meet had a lot of big schools, but we ended up beating a lot of them,” Grisham said. “To do that felt great.”

While everyone else had a partner, junior Kendall Morales went maverick and competed solo after her partner, Kaci Allen, was unable to compete due to illness. She won three rounds, as well.

“It was really scary going mav,” Morales said. “I was pretty nervous at first but all in all, it went well.”

LD debaters Abby Smith, Gracie Davis, Katja Galle and Jordy Maltos competed as well, although their district meet is not until March.

“We like for the debaters to get plenty of meet practices in before district,” coach Melonie Menefee said. “We can practice at school for interpretation and extemp events, but there really is no other good way to get better at debate than actually debating.”
