Speech team takes first place at meet

The members of the speech and debate team show off their medals won at Saturday’s speech meet.

This weekend the speech team hosted their first invitational meet. While they’ve attended other meets several times this year, they decided to host one because there were no one-day meets close enough to attend, and they wanted the practice.

“It gets tough in January to find meets we can attend,” CX coach Melonie Menefee said. “Most of them start on Friday night, and several of our kids play basketball. So, Mrs. Henson decided that we would just host our own.”

The team came out with first place overall, with every student placing in their entered events.

“The meet was a great way to practice,” sophomore Evan Grisham said. “It was much needed because CX district is next Wednesday.”

There were even some former graduates who judged some of the events.

“It was cool to get to see some of the people that graduated last year, and catch up with them,” senior Kendall Lee said. “It made the day more fun being able to talk to them.”

For some, this meet was the first time trying some of their events.

“It was my first time doing prose in front of a judge,” junior Kaci Allen said. “I was so excited and surprised when they said that I got first.”

The students agree that even though it was a small meet, they were glad for the opportunity.

“It was great that we didn’t have to get up so early because it was at our high school,” junior Abby Smith said. “There were only a couple teams there, but I was still glad for the chance to practice.”

The debate teams will travel to Godley Saturday so the CX teams can compete one more time before district competition Wednesday and so that the LD competitors can get more rounds under their belts.

“We’ll be worn out Saturday night by the time we get home, because speech meet days are really long days,” Menefee said. “But, we will be so glad that we went and got the experience.”
