The Bison Brigade hit the competition field last week, bringing home a division two rating and plenty of memories from weeks of rehearsals and traveling together to Friday night football games. The theme of this year’s show was “A Little Night Music” and the group started working in late July.

“I really liked our show this year,” junior Billy Duncan said. “My favorite part has to be the drumline solo in the third song of the program.”

The group traveled to McGregor for the contest, competing and then heading back to Buffalo to eat together and discuss judge comments. As always, they enjoyed their time together.

“Hanging out with the band is always fun,” drum major Emma Cocking said. “The band as a group feels like having a second family. Every group has its arguments, but all in all, everyone gets along very well.”

This was Cocking’s first year as drum major and she said she has enjoyed the experience.

“I feel like my first year as a drum major went pretty well, but I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the rest of the leadership team,” Cocking said. “My favorite part of this group is their energy because no matter what happens, they always look on the bright side.”

The group still has football season to finish out before moving into concert season. And of course, the group starts planning now for next marching season in the spring.

“I’m really excited about today,” director Jeff Villarreal said after the contest. “I couldn’t be happier with the band. What I’m more excited about? Getting ready for NEXT season!”
