Last Friday night, seven pairs of students were dressed up and glammed out at the homecoming game so they could show off their selection to the homecoming court. Underclassmen dukes and duchesses joined the senior nominees while everyone waited for the big reveal. At the start of halftime, all eyes were on the dukes and duchesses as they were escorted onto the field by their parents.

“Honestly I was super excited that I was going to be a part of something in school,” freshman Juan Santos said. “I was so excited to share this memory with one of my good friends, Emily Dominguez.”

It wasn’t quite as nerve-racking for the underclassmen since they knew they were top in their class, but there were still butterflies as they took to the field.

“I was very nervous but excited,” sophomore duchess Nicole Virgin said. “My favorite part was getting to walk on the field and having my friends cheer for me.”

Waiting to see who won the king and queen votes is one of the most iconic traditions of the annual homecoming game. This year’s campaigning paid off for queen Alani Jones.

“I saw someone post their campaign and I hadn’t known we were starting,” Jones said. “I wanted to do something different and funny, I didn’t just want it to be boring because no one is going to vote for someone boring.”

Last year’s queen and king, Omar Almeida and Emma Adams, were on hand to crown Jones and king Rodrigo Carrillo.

“I was kind of shocked,” Jones said. “Before they announced it, I was literally telling my dad that I probably wasn’t going to get it.”
