Seniors Preston Mosley and Ryan Slatter listen to the debate teacher who came to work with the group and their coaches. CX debate competes at district on Jan. 30.

With district competition little more than a month away, the CX debate team spent last Saturday polishing their skills. With a team made up of all first-time debaters, an extra push with new strategies was the goal for the day. A former speech teacher came in to answer any questions and give helpful tips.

“I thought Mrs. Kirk was very helpful when she taught us how to strategize our attacks for debate,” senior Preston Mosely said. “I had a lot of fun on Saturday and I’m glad to have spent it with my friends learning cool stuff.”

The group spent the morning going over the basics of debate. They broke for a lunch made by coach Melonie Menefee and went back to work learning new things and strategies.

“We really learned a lot on Saturday,” freshman Evan Grisham said. “She was able to help us with our cases and gave us an insight on a lot of things that we weren’t aware of.”

The speech and debate teams will face tough competition at district but feel they are on the right track to preparing to win. The top two teams that place at district will advance to State, so the pressure to win is crucial.

“We expect the competition to be tough, not only from Mildred but also competing against the other teams from Buffalo,” senior Ryan Slatter said. “We’ve been working really hard and plan on making it to Austin.”
