Saudi Arabia announced Friday night (US time) that Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi was killed in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul and said 18 Saudis were being held as suspects.

The announcement, which said he was killed in a fight, came more than two weeks after the Washington Post reporter entered the Saudi consulate for paperwork to marry his Turkish fiancée and never came out. Saudi Arabia has been denying reports that Khashoggi was killed and dismembered inside the consulate, but brought in a cleaning crew ahead of Turkish investigators, leading to suspicions that they were not being honest.

The journalist had written columns critical of the Saudi government while living in the U.S. His latest article was published posthumously.
