To memorialize the anniversary of 9/11, Patriot Day and Constitution day, art students completed Peter Max projects this month. Peter Max has painted Lady Liberty every year since 1976, and art students created their own Lady Liberty art this year.

“It’s important that our students learn that they can express emotions using art and pay tribute to others with their art,” teacher Amanda Harter said. “It’s important that we teach them to never forget that freedom isn’t free.”

After discussing the definition of Patriotism, looking back at the events of 9/11 through photographs, and looking at art created by Peter Max, students were given printed images of various Statue of Liberty photographs to begin sketching their ideas. Upper-level art students were given the choice of watercolor or acrylic paint and ink, and all first-year art used watercolor paints to create their pop art masterpieces.

“I absolutely loved watching my students carefully draw out various Lady Liberty designs and then add splashes of colors to their backgrounds,” teacher Amanda Harter said. “It’s important that our students learn that they can express emotions using art and pay tribute to others with their art.”
