Giggles and squeals filled the cafeteria. Usually full of high school students, the area housed elementary students who were reading and creating pumpkin necklaces. It was the first LOL Club meeting. The club – the full name is Love of Literature Club – invites students in grades K-2 to come to the high school for snacks, crafts and reading each month.

“We wanted to do something that spread a love of reading to students, and this seemed like the perfect age to work with,” adviser Melonie Menefee said. “We are excited to keep growing and having fun with reading.”

“The meeting was so much fun,” senior Vanessa Ramirez said. “My favorite part was making the crafts with the students.”

The club will be meeting once a month to read books, make crafts, and eat snacks. Each month that the club meets will be a different theme.

“This meeting the theme was pumpkins because it was near Halloween,” senior Andrea Garcia said. “I’m excited to see all the students again at the next meeting.”

To the club is free to join, but if any of the parents or students want to buy the book of the month they can.

“I’m happy that we started this club for the younger students,” sophomore Itzy Vasquez said. “I like the fact that it is free to join.”
