Student council sponsors fundraiser contest

Every hero needs a squad …

In an effort to help children across the country suffering from leukemia or lymphoma, the student council is sponsoring a contest to see which first period class can raise the most money to donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Several first period teachers volunteered to participate, and their classes will see who can raise the most money by next Friday, April 27.

According to the American Cancer Society, a recent estimate for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2018 is about 74,680 people to be diagnosed. Lymphoma is a cancer of lymph nodes that begins in infection-fighting cells of the immune system.

“Lymphoma is cancer that is never really talked about,” junior Kayleigh Rhodes said. “There is not a lot of attention being brought to it so I’m glad we are able to help the fight with it.”

With a week to go in the fundraiser, students are realizing that they have to get busy if they hope to win. With so many students out for county show and other contests this week, plus boot camps and EOCs last week, the fundraiser has gotten off to a slow start.

“The fundraiser ends next week and I’m trying to get together a lot of money for my first period class,” senior Kassidy Bell said. “I want to be able to say that I help with this cause.”

The first period class that raises the most money will have a pizza and ice cream party to celebrate winning and helping raise money.

“I want to be the class that wins the pizza party,”  junior Jose Sanchez said. “Because I like pizza and I also want to know that my class cares about this cancer.”
