Power lifters compete at Rice

Last week the team traveled to Mildred. Last Saturday on February third, they traveled to Rice to compete. The girls and boys teams both competed very successfully.

“So far, we’ve been very successful in our meets,” sophomore John Vaughn said. “We just go in and do what we know to do.”

Meet days are long days for the competitors, with early-morning leave times.

“We have to wake up super early for meets,” Vaughn said. “By early I mean like four in the morning.”

The team practices after school on most days. Powerlifting is known to be one of the most strenuous sports and the competitors have to practice religiously in order to succeed.

“We practice really hard and for long hours,” Lack said. “If we didn’t practice, I’m not sure how we would do in competitions.”

At meets, people are grouped differently according to their weight. Weight classes are set up so the competition is more fair.

“I’m trying to lose five pounds,” Shaw said. “I need to move down to the weight class below me so I can go to state.”
