On Wednesday, January 24, 25-year-old Robert Martinez from Bronx, New York, was sentenced to one year in jail for felony aggravated cruelty to an animal. This comes after Martinez pled guilty last year, after abusing his girlfriend’s puppy so badly that it lost a leg.

According to abc13 News, Martinez lifted Sassy to his shoulder and slammed her onto the ground. Sassy tried to get away but she couldn’t walk, let alone run. After that incident, Martinez’s girlfriend reportedly took the dog to the ASPCA, where she told veterinarians that the dog had fallen down the stairs. However, evidence of prior abuse in the form of broken ribs was detected, and the NYPD was notified.

Due to being slammed to the ground, on September 16, 2016, the dog’s right hind leg was amputated. The mix-breed dog whose original name was Sassy, but has been renamed Sally, has since been rescued and is now in a loving home.

As for Martinez, as part of the plea agreement, he must register as an animal abuser, and is not allowed to own an animal for five years.
