During the Lady Bison’s home game against Leon, Lizette Vasquez took the opening shots before the game and during the opening of third quarter. She also sat on the Lady Bison bench during the game.

“It was really sweet when I saw they had Lizette as the honorary player,” sophomore Makayla Gilliam. “It was really heart-warming.”

The Lady Bison have an honorary player or coach for each home game. The honorary player and coach is able to join the Lady Bison in the locker room pre-game and shoots the opening shot.

“We started the honorary coach/player thing to let people have the Lady Bison experience,” Coach Jozette Jenkins said. “I thought it would allow people to see how much work they put in.”

The crowd cheered as Vasquez, who has Down’s Syndrome, shot the ball. She made her free throws both times received high-fives and hugs from all the players, including the opponents.

“We were all really proud of her,” senior Lauren Pate said. “It was a very heart-warming experience.”
