While most students would rather be sleeping in on a Saturday morning, the speech and debate team was rolling out of the parking lot at 5:30 Saturday morning, headed to a speech meet in Gladewater. For the CX debaters, this was one last chance to practice before their district meet on Feb. 1.

“The meet was really good to help us get in some practice with people from other schools,” senior Kendall Morales said. “It’s a lot better than debating with people from our school because they don’t know our stuff.”

With a young CX team, most of them competing for the first time this year, the practice meets are very important, according to coach Melonie Menefee.

“They are getting better with every meet we attend,” Menfee said. “They won 9 out of 15 rounds overall, and two teams placed in the top six out of 26 teams competing.”

Sophomore Lilah Molina won first in poetry and also debated as well.

“Getting first felt so amazing,” Molina said. “The meet was very successful, I think because we were able to practice more, with different people.”
