The journalism staff shows off medals won in this year’s ILPC competition. Both publications took top honors.

The journalism staff garnered multiple individual awards from the Interscholastic League Press Conference (ILPC) state competition, which announced results last week. They earned Distinguished Merit ratings for both yearbook and online newspaper. In addition, Press Women of Texas announced state winners for its annual competition today, with three staffers taking awards.

Four staff members have also earned enough points to be named to the All-State Journalism Staff: Jordan Jenkins, Erykah Anderson, Sarah Burchfield, and Brittany Scott.

“I’m so proud of these kids and how hard they have worked,” adviser Melonie Menefee said. “This is a relatively young staff without much experience behind them, and they have taken on a new writing style and new challenges and have done very well.”

Erykah Anderson received the following awards for ILPC – Online Newspaper: News Feature second, Entertainment Review HM. She earned the following for ILPC – Yearbook: Tribute Ad Spread Tops in Texas, Tribute Ad Spread second, Feature Spread third, Academic Spread first, Club Spread HM, Academic Feature Story third, Club/Organization Feature Story second, Academic Photo third. Erykah also won an HM for feature writing from PWT.                                            

Jordan Jenkins earned the following awards for ILPC – Online Newspaper: Sports Column third, Feature Photo third. She received the following awards for ILPC – Yearbook: Yearbook Captions third, Sports Spread HM, Club/Organization Spread second, Multi-Topic Spread second, Sports Feature Story second. Jordan also earned an HM for her sports blog from PWT.                                                     

Brittany Scott garnered the following award for ILPC – Online Newspaper: General News Photo first. She received the following for ILPC – Yearbook: Tribute Ad Spread Tops in Texas, Tribute Ad Spread second, Sports Spread second, Multi-topic Spread first, Club/Organization Feature Story third. Brittany also won an HM for feature writing from PWT.

Kendall Morales received the following awards for ILPC Online Newspaper: News Writing HM, Photo Slideshow second.                                      

Ally Gaskins earned the following award for ILPC – Online Newspaper: Sports News Story second.                                           

Lilah Molina received the following award for ILPC – Online Newspaper: Personal Opinion Column HM.

As a group, the staff earned the following awards for yearbook: Theme Development second, Theme Copy and Captions first, Feature Spread second, Student Life Spread first, Student Life Spread third, Academic Spread third, Student Life Feature Story first.
